An Overview of Marketing Jobs Available to MBA Graduates

Many marketers find their niche in advertising agencies or advertising departments within larger companies. In an agency setting, marketing professionals may work for just one client or multiple, contributing to a range of different campaigns. Market researchers help companies analyze various industry trends to better predict what products will sell and at what cost/volume. As of May 2015, the BLS reported the median salary for jobs in this field as $62,150, also forecasting a 19% growth rate between 2014 and 2024.

Postgraduate degrees better position applicants for employment as market researchers, being typically perceived as having more experience and value than their undergraduate counterparts.

Merchandising

Merchandising professionals have the opportunity to perform a wide variety of tasks – from searching for new products to managing storefronts and optimizing sales. Focusing primarily on monitoring industry trends and competing businesses, they often having to maintain relationships with a diverse group of people. They typically travel extensively, visiting trade shows, vendors, manufacturers, suppliers, and consumers from all over.

According to the BLS, the median salary for buying agents in 2015 was approximately $59,620. As with most industries, earning potential can increase significantly for those with postgraduate degrees. In addition, merchadising positions typically include commission-based structures, allowing talented individuals to earn alternative compensation and pursue promotions.

Brand Management

The role of a brand manager focuses on shaping and maintaining the overall image their employer or client would like to present to the public. They create, publicize, and develop the brand messaging that is released for public consumption.

Brand managers perform a fair amount of marketing research, helping them better understand macro sociological and cultural trends, the public’s perception of the brand, the marketing strategies of their competition, and more.

According to Glassdoor.com, the average salary for a brand manager in the United States is $110,000 annually.
